Hawaiian word meaning "delight."


Hauoli, a steam yacht, was built in 1903 by Robbins Drydock Co., Brooklyn, N.Y., and purchased by the Navy as California in August 1917 from her owner, Clara B. Stocker, of New York. After fitting out, she commissioned at New York Navy Yard 24 December 1917, Lt. (j.g.) W. Applebye-Robinson, USNRF, commanding. Her name was changed back to the original Hauoli 18 February 1918.

Hauoli spent the first year of her service as n patrol vessel in New York Harbor. She patrolled outside the harbor also, and occasionally carried passengers to and from convoy~. The yacht was transferred to special duty 28 January 1919 and assigned to the experimental use of Thomas A. Edison for ASW studies. Edison installed listening devices in Hauoli and carried out tests in and around New York harbor. Before demobilization cut short the experiments with Hauoli, she was withdrawn from that service and decommissioned 8 October 1919, and later sold to Denton Shore Lumber Co., Tampa, Fla., 7 September 1920.

The strike of World War I induced a turning point for the World, including the United States and the Sachem. Germany's tactic to defeat Britain was to block supply lines coming from North America. Indeed the supplies for the Allies entered Europe through Britain. Germany would attempt to "besiege" Britain, provoke starvation and economic weakness. The newly-invented war submarine, the U-Boat, was deployed massively in the Atlantic to dissuade allied convoys to reach british harbors. In March 1917, on the belief that the US would anyway enter the war, the german Kaiser adopted an unrestricted warfare policy, in which U-Boats crews were required to target and sunk any ship that was suspected to carry supplies to the Allied.

As United States started to send supplies and troops to the Allied side, a counter-attack method had to be found to defend against armed submarines, a new kind of weapon that could strike without warning and that was for the time, extremely hard to detect.

So the U.S. Government began requisitioning private crafts for a rent. The yachts were more versatile in size, speed and maneuverability, enough to outmaneuver and spot German U-Boats, and would constitute sufficient fleet auxiliaries. The Sachem was one of these private yachts Manton Metcalf agreed to loan the ship to the Navy, which took ownership on July, 3rd of 1917, and renamed it USS Sachem (SP-192). The prefix "SP" for Section Patrol is a World War I designation for the civilian patrol crafts.

The USS Sachem (SP 192) was modified in July, probably at the Brooklyn Navy yard, then entered in commission on August, 19th 1917, under the Third Maritime District and assigned to harbor patrol as a submarine chaser. During the war, the ship was captained by a USN Lieutenant, Warren Stone Harris.

But before patrolling the harbors, the Sachem had a special duty during the war.

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the Lucky Number Show is part of the Lucky Channel, a radio program broadcast on channel 8.5 in Johto. Each Friday, a random ID number is generated and then broadcast on the Lucky Channel throughout the following week. The player can bring a Pokémon with an ID number matching that week's lucky number to a receptionist on the ground floor of the Goldenrod Radio Tower to receive a prize. A shipyard is a place where ships are built and repaired. These can be yachts, military vessels, cruise liners or other cargo or passenger ships. Dockyards are sometimes more associated with maintenance and basing activities than shipyards, which are sometimes associated more with initial construction. The terms are routinely used interchangeably, in part because the evolution of dockyards and shipyards has often caused them to change or merge roles.

The Long Beach Naval Shipyard, which closed in 1997, was located on Terminal Island between the city of Long Beach and the San Pedro district of Los Angeles, approximately 23 miles south of the Los Angeles International Airport. The primary role of NSY Long Beach at the time of its closure was overhaul and maintenance of conventionally-powered US Navy surface ships, but it also had served as the homeport for several auxiliary ships during its operating history.

Fore River Shipyard was a shipyard owned by General Dynamics Corporation located on Weymouth Fore River in Braintree and Quincy, Massachusetts. It began operations in 1883 in Braintree, and moved to its final location on Quincy Point in 1901. In 1913, it was purchased by Bethlehem Steel, and later transferred to Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation. It was sold to General Dynamics in 1963, and closed in 1986. During its operation, yardworkers constructed hundreds of ships, for both military and civilian clients.

The Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company was a United States shipyard, active from 1917 to 1948. It was founded during World War I to build ships for the United States Shipping Board. During World War II, it built ships as part of the U.S. Government's Emergency Shipbuilding program. Operated by a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, the shipyard was located at Kearny Point where the mouth of the Hackensack River meets Newark Bay in the Port of New York and New Jersey. The shipyard site is now part of River Terminal, a massive distribution facility that is partially a foreign trade zone.

The Alameda Works Shipyard, in Alameda, California, United States, was one of the largest and best equipped shipyards in the country. The only building remaining from the yard is the Union Iron Works Powerhouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Brooklyn Robins Dry Dock were an American soccer team which took its name from the workplace it represented. The dock was part of the Todd Pacific Shipyards in Brooklyn who formed the professional soccer club in 1918 to play in the National Association Football League. Robins played until the league folded in 1921. Robins best finish was third in 1920 and 1921, but won the 1921 National Challenge Cup.

USS Druid (SP-321) was a private yacht launched 10 February 1902 as Rheclair that was built for Daniel G. Reid. Reid sold the yacht to Senator Nelson W. Aldrich who renamed the yacht Nirvana only just over a year before his death. Aldrich's estate chartered Nirvana to John Wanamaker until it was bought by his son Rodman Wanamaker who used the yacht for cruising until a fire on 14 December 1916, just before a cruise south, severely damaged the vessel. He chartered an alternate vessel for his trip south and, after full repairs, the yacht was sold to Walter W. Dwyer who gave it the name Druid with intentions to sell the yacht to the government in order to finance a shipyard venture in Pensacola, Florida.

SS Yorktown was launched February 10, 1894, by Delaware River Iron Ship Building and Engine Works, Chester, Pennsylvania for the Old Dominion Steamship Company for the company's overnight New York City/Norfolk, Virginia service. The United States Navy purchased Yorktown on April 21, 1898, to be commissioned as the second USS Resolute, an auxiliary cruiser and transport that saw naval service during the Spanish–American War 1898�. The United States Department of War acquired the ship on January 22, 1900, for service as the United States Army Transport (USAT) Rawlings. The ship was sold to the Merchants and Miners Transportation Company of Baltimore, Maryland on July 27, 1901, and renamed Powhatan. Powhatan was wrecked in 1916 and in 1919 rebuilt as the world's first turbo-electric propelled passenger ship Cuba for luxury passenger and express freight service between Florida and Cuba with the Miami Steamship Company beginning service in 1920. Renamed Seneca, the ship burned and sank December 30, 1927, at Hoboken, New Jersey then refloated September 2, 1928, and scrapped.

The Delaware River Iron Ship Building and Engine Works, was a major late-19th-century American shipyard located on the Delaware River in Chester, Pennsylvania. It was founded by the industrialist John Roach and is often referred to by its parent company name of John Roach & Sons, or just known as the Roach shipyard. For the first fifteen years of its existence, the shipyard was by far the largest and most productive in the United States, building more tonnage of ships than its next two major competitors combined, in addition to being the U.S. Navy's largest contractor. The yard specialized in the production of large passenger freighters, but built every kind of vessel from warships to cargo ships, oil tankers, ferries, barges, tugs and yachts.

Royal Denship was a Danish multi-facility conglomerate ship and yacht builder. Presently in administration, the company has created some of the world's largest super yachts.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a shipyard and industrial complex located in northwest Brooklyn in New York City, New York. The Navy Yard is located on the East River in Wallabout Bay, a semicircular bend of the river across from Corlears Hook in Manhattan. It is bounded by Navy Street to the west, Flushing Avenue to the south, Kent Avenue to the east, and the East River on the north. The site, which covers 225.15 acres (91.11 ha), is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Skinner & Eddy Corporation, commonly known as Skinner & Eddy, was a Seattle, Washington-based shipbuilding corporation that existed from 1916 to 1923. The yard is notable for completing more ships for the United States war effort during World War I than any other American shipyard, and also for breaking world production speed records for individual ship construction.

The Seattle Construction and Drydock Company was a shipbuilding company based in Seattle, Washington. Formally established in 1911, the shipyard could trace its history back to 1882, when Robert Moran opened a marine repair shop at Yesler's Wharf. This shop became the Moran Brothers Shipyard in 1906 and the Seattle Construction and Drydock Company at the end of 1911.

The plant of the Moran company, together with that of the Seattle Dry Dock & Ship Building Company, which had been organized in 1887 and was under the control of the Morans, was at this time the most complete on the Pacific Coast, outside of San Francisco. It had grown to such immense proportions that even while the construction of its masterpiece, the (USS) Nebraska, was underway, other work was being handled in the same efficient manner as before the big contract had been secured. Some of the notable work turned out during the period was the building of the steel tugs Bahada and Wyadda, the lighthouse tender Heather and the rebuilding of the steamships Cutch and Willamette.

When the Nebraska was finished and given her official trial trip in the waters of the Straits of Fuca, Captain Perkins, senior member of the trial board, pronounced her one of the best vessels in the United States navy. Notwithstanding bad weather, the ship fully met the requirements of the Government and proved that Seattle had a construction company capable of building the largest kind of ship. In March, 1906, the Moran Brothers Company was sold to Eastern capitalists, who reorganized the business under the name of The Moran Company, which, in 1912, became the Seattle Construction & Dry Dock Company. During the year 1911 the company began building the first of six submarine boats for the United States navy. About the same time five steel whalers were built for companies operating in the northern whaling waters, and in 1913 the $500,000 dry dock was completed. This dry dock was 468 feet long and 110 feet wide and the steamship Admiral Farragut was the first vessel to enter it for repairs.

Edward Phinley Morse was a Canadian-American industrialist and proprietor of the Morse Dry Dock and Repair Company, a major turn of the 20th century ship repair facility located in Brooklyn, New York. He later assisted in the creation of United Dry Docks, Inc., a corporation formed by the merger of six New York-based ship repair companies including his own, and at the time the largest corporation of its type in the world.

Groton Iron Works was a company formed in 1917 to build cargo ships for the United States Shipping Board during World War I. The company owned two shipyards: one in Noank, Connecticut for wooden ships and the other in Groton, Connecticut for steel ships. The focus of this article is the Groton, Connecticut yard.

Todd Pacific Shipyards, Los Angeles Division was a shipyard in San Pedro, Los Angeles, California. Before applying its last corporate name, the shipyard had been called Los Angeles Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company and Todd Shipyards, Los Angeles Division. Under those three names, the San Pedro yard built at least 130 ships from 1917 to 1989.

Bay Shipbuilding Company (BSC) is a shipyard and dry dock company in Sturgeon Bay, Door County, Wisconsin. As of 2015, Bay Ships was a subsidiary of Fincantieri Marine Group and produces articulated tug and barges, OPA-90 compliant double hull tank ships and offshore support vessels. It also provides repair services to the lake freighter fleet. In the past the shipyard located in Sturgeon Bay has operated under several different names and traces its history back to 1918. The company also built 40,000 ton Lake freighters in the 1970s and 1980s. While capable of producing large freighters, the yard has not built a freighter over 20,000 tons since 1987. Former names of the shipyards at the 2015 location of Bay Shipbuilding are: Sturgeon Bay Shipbuilding, Leathem D. Smith Shipbuilding Company and Christy Corporation.

An auxiliary floating drydock is a type of US Navy floating dry dock. Floating dry docks are able to submerge underwater and to be placed under a ship in need of repair below the water line. Water is then pumped out of the floating dry dock, raising the ship out of the water. The ship becomes blocked on the deck of the floating dry dock for repair. Most floating dry docks have no engine and are towed by tugboats to their destinations. Floating dry docks come in different sizes to accommodate varying ship sizes, while large floating dry docks come in sections and can be combined to increase their size and lift power. Ballast pontoon tanks are flooded with water to submerge or pumped dry to raise the ship.

This page serves as directory to an encyclopedic study of the Millers Falls Company, a hand tool manufacturer once located in Western Massachusetts. A Massachusetts-based entity until 1982, the firm was incorporated as the Millers Falls Manufacturing Company in 1868, was renamed the Millers Falls Company in 1872, and became a division of Ingersoll-Rand in 1962. The business relocated to New Jersey in 1982 following a leveraged buyout organized by Ray Sponsler, an Ingersoll-Rand executive.

The new ownership changed the name to the Millers Falls Tool Company. Ohio Tool Systems bought the operation in 1994 and four years later sold it to the Lutz File and Tool Company, the manufacturers of Gorilla Glue. Lutz allowed the Millers Falls trademark to expire in 2006, and the Hangzhou Great Star Industrial Co., Ltd, of Hangzhou, China re-registered it in 2009.

The Millers Falls pages at oldtoolheaven.com focus on the pre-1982 company and include information on a number of businesses that were either absorbed by the Millers Falls Falls Company or affiliated with it in some way. Notable among these are the Goodell-Pratt Company the Langdon Mitre Box Company Gunn, Amidon & Company and the various enterprises of Charles H. Amidon and Quimby S. Backus. The tools manufactured by these firms were of excellent quality, and like Millers Falls products, are prized by collectors of antique tools and woodworkers alike.

Although the company's hand-powered woodworking tools are emphasized here, the firm manufactured and distributed precision tools, mechanics' tools and power tools as well. The site's emphasis on hand planes, bit braces, drills, miter boxes, screwdrivers and the like can be deceiving. Those using these pages should be aware that for the last forty to fifty years of its existence, the operation was dependent on the success of its electric tools.

The product of over two decades of research, the site is revised as new information comes to light. The author, Randy Roeder, worked as an academic librarian for thirty-five years and has written a half dozen tool-related articles for the Gristmill , the journal of the Mid-West Tool Collectors Association. He continues to research the Millers Falls Company, its predecessors and the businesses related to it.

Umi however was the child of Liloa with a woman who he just took, her name being Akahiakuleana. It was widely thought that she was not an alii, but according to her genealogy she is indeed an alii she and Liloa had a common ancestor. They were both descendants of Kanipahu.

Here is how Liloa lived, and his generation pertaining to Umi, Liloa was the father of Umi he was the high chief of Hawaii Island at that time, and he always lived at Waipio in Hamakua, Hawaii.

When he went to the north side of Hamakua adjacent to Hilo, he went to consecrate a heiau, that heiau being Manini that heiau of Liloa’s was proposed at Koholalele in Hamakua. And after it was consecrated, he waited for the relaxing of the kapu [ka hoomahanahana] to be done, and moved to the north of that area and he stayed at Kaawikiwiki because he had a great desire to play pahee and all the other entertainments.

When he stayed there, he went to bathe in the river of Hoea this land is adjacent to Kealakaha he came upon Akahiakuleana there. She was returning from her menses, and was bathing before she was cleansed of her defilement (and then thereafter would return to her husband, as did the women of those days), and her woman servant was at the edge of the water holding her skirt.

Liloa saw that she was a beautiful woman, and wanted her. They slept together and Akahiakuleana became pregnant. Liloa asked her, “Who do you come from? What is your name?” She said, “I am Akahiakuleana Kuleanakupiko is my parent.” Liloa said, “Perhaps you are a cousin of mine.” She said, “Perhaps yes.”

Then Liloa gave her his orders pertaining to the child, “If you give birth to our child and it is a girl, then name her for your side, but should you give birth to a son, then give him the name Umi.” Akahiakuleana said, “What is the thing that will make clear that this child is yours, the alii?”

It was then that Liloa gave her his malo, and his niho palaoa, and his war club [laau palau], saying, “Here are the symbols of our son and when he grows up give him these items.” Then Akahiakuleana agreed to Liloa’s orders, and Akahiakuleana gave her servant woman to care for, these symbols which Liloa gave for the child. And when this was over, Liloa went and tied together ti leaves to make a malo, and Liloa put on this ti leaf malo.

When he returned to his own house, his men saw that his malo was made of ti leaves, and that it wasn’t his real malo they said to him, “Liloa has gone mad, that is not his real malo! His malo is made of ti leaves!”

Liloa remained there, and when the relaxing of the kapu of his heiau was done, he returned to Waipio, where he originally lived.

After this, Akahiakuleana was pregnant with Umi, and it was assumed that her actual kane was the father of this child, it was not known that Liloa was the father of the child.

When the child was born, the mother called him Umi, in accordance with Liloa’s naming him Umi when Umi was fathered by Liloa.

And Umi was raised until he was grown. Here is something said of Umi: when his father (the husband of Akahiakuleana) went farming and returned, all of the poi was eaten by Umi and he beat Umi. And that is how Umi was beaten when the poi was all gone, and the fish, and when whatever was all eaten by Umi that is how the father abused him, because he figured that the boy was his Umi and his mother were greatly saddened by this beating. Therefore, Umi secretly asked his mother, “Do I not have another father? Is this my only father?”

Akahiakuleana responded, “You have a father who lives in Waipio, and his name is Liloa.” Umi said, “Maybe I will go to my father.” “Yes, you go.”

And another time when Umi ate all the poi, his father once again beat Umi so Akahiakuleana said, “My dear kane, the boy you are beating is not yours.” The man was incensed and said sarcastically, “Well who is the father of your child, is it Liloa’s?” Akahiakuleana answered, “Yes, Liloa is the father of my son.” The man answered, “Where then are the symbols that show that my son from you, my wife, belongs to Liloa?” Akahiakuleana called her woman servant to bring the items left by Liloa for Umi. Akahiakuleana said to her kane, “Do you see for sure who the father of the boy is?” And he saw that the boy was not his.

[So begins the telling of perhaps the first story of Umi in the Hawaiian Language Newspapers. Many versions of this story would be told throughout the life of the newspapers, because of the great importance of this alii and his many royal descendants who follow after him. Umi’s story appearing in Hae Hawaii begins on 3/23/1859 and runs through 4/6/1859 under the title “Mooolelo Hawaii.”

The book “Ka Mooolelo Hawaii,” was originally written by students of Lahainaluna Seminary, edited by Sheldon Dibble, and published in 1838. This was then added to by John Fawcett Pogue (Pokuea) and printed in Hae Hawaii from 4/14/1858 to 4/6/1859 (without conclusion), and then printed in final book form in 1858 (appearing on sale in the middle of 1859 for half a dollar a book) with the same title, “Ka Mooolelo Hawaii.”]
